Met Gala Theme for 2019: Notes on Camp

I was so busy worrying about “Winter Coming” and the premier of Game Of Thrones that I didn’t realize another big event was almost upon us. That’s right, it’s almost Met Gala time.

This year’s Met Gala theme is “Notes on Camp” – and when I found out I wondered: “Are we about to see some incredible tent, hiking boots, smores couture?”

But after a bit of research I realized they were talking about camp as in campy fashion, as in OTT crazy unapologetic fashion, as in the way some drag queens describe themselves.

Looking at you Ben De La Creme, you campy, campy bitch.

And while I can sit here and try to explain the concept, I think it’s just best to grab some quotes from the literary work that inspired the theme: “Notes on Camp”, an essay published in 1964 by Susan Sontag.

The hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.

“Camp taste is, above all, a mode of enjoyment, of appreciation—not judgment. Camp is generous. It wants to enjoy.”

The ultimate Camp statement: it’s good because it’s awful… Of course, one can’t always say that. Only under certain conditions.”

Camp is the heroism of people, not called upon to be heroes “

“Camp is a question mark that won’t let it’s line be straightened into an exclamation point”

So yeah, extravagant and confusing by definition. Camp is bold and splash-a-drink-in-your-face exciting. Which is why I can’t wait to see what Beyonce, Lady Gaga and all the other celebrities chose to wear this year. May 6th is the day. Camp is here bitches, show up!
